2. Presentation by Tim Slack, on energy use on campus
   1. President’s Climate Commitment: pledge to stop using fossil fuels
      1. Goal to become sustainable within ourselves
      2. Cortland’s primary carbon footprint
   2. US: Half of our energy source comes from coal–which puts a significant amount of carbon dioxide into the air
      1. Coal is not cheap, and coal is not sustainable
         1. A sustainable route is always a cheaper route, once you factor in the costs of clean up, health effects, and environmental impacts
      2. Impacts of burning coal
         1. high levels of mercury in water correlate closely with coal usage
         2. 1 in 5 people have excessive mercury in their blood
         3. Asthma rates have doubled in the last 10 years
         4. Environmental: mountain tops are cut off to extract the coal–leading to a HUGE loss of biodiversity and ecosystems
   3. If Cortland reduces its consumption of electricity by 12%, we can afford 100% sustainable energy

5. Step It Up 2007 (http://www.stepitup2007.org)
   1. Nationwide call of action by universities to demand that Congress Step It Up, and
      1. create 5 million green jobs conserving 20% of our energy by 2015
      2. cut carbon 80% by 2050
      3. no new coal fired plants
   2. Here at Cortland, you can encourage Congress persons to Step It Up
      1. On November 3rd, at 12:30 meet on the steps outside Old Main–a photo will be taken to upload to the Step It Up website, encouraging Congress to take action
      2. Also on November 3rd, the Philosophy Dept is hosting a Peace Building and Environmental Justice Conference and Presentation. Be on the lookout for flyers around campus

Welcome to the blog for CSAVE–Cortland Students Advocating for a Valuable Environment. We are a newly forming group on the SUNY Cortland campus. We have a lot of amazing goals that we’d like to accomplish this year in areas of Consumer Awareness, Energy, Green Planting and Waste, and Recycling.  We are really open to ideas, and  new people! Come check us out, our meetings are Thursdays at 7pm in 204 of Corey Union. The room placement may be subject to change, so if you’re interested in attending a meeting e-mail the group at save.cortland@gmail.com and one of us will let you know if the room has changed.
